Popular pop singer Michael Jackson has found refuge for his growing troubles in religion and faith. Word is that that the pop icon has adopted Islam and is now a Muslim. He has also adopted a new name and now goes by ‘Mikaeel’. An alternative name of ‘Mustafa’ was rejected by Jackson. MJ has seen both the good and bad parts of a celebrity’s life. From being one of the most celebrated artists of all time to being accused of being pedophile, he has seen it all.

According to a TOI article,

The 50-year-old star, pledged his allegiance to the Koran in a ceremony at a friend’s mansion in Los Angeles, the Sun reported.
Jackson sat on the floor wearing a tiny hat after an Imam was summoned to officiate — days before the singer is due to appear at London’s High Court where he is being sued by an Arab Sheik, the paper said.

The star decided to adopt the new religion while he was recording a song at the home of his friend where a Jehovah’s witness was brought up to help him through the ceremony.

Apparently the star of hits like ‘the Way You Make Me Feel-was convinced by his producer and songwriter friends David Wharnsby and Phillip Bubal.

“They began talking to him about their beliefs, and how they thought they had become better people after they converted. Michael soon began warming to the idea. “An Imam was summoned from the mosque and Michael went through the shahada, which is the Muslim declaration of belief,” the source revealed.

Miller Farms of Platteville, Colorado is doing something that I have never heard of before. The family owned farm is giving away 100 pounds of fresh produce to every person entering their farms this weekend (Nov 22 & Nov 23 2008). You can take in family and friends and harvest your own vegetables. The vegetables that you will find in the farm are Red and Yukon Potatoes, Beets, Carrots, Onions and Pumpkins.

As per the information on their website:

We have decided that this coming weekend, Saturday, November 22nd and Sunday, November 23rd, we will be opening our doors to the public for a free weekend for folks to come and harvest what we have left in our fields. We are doing this as a way to say thank you for everyone’s support over the years. We have red and Yukon potatoes, beets, carrots, and onions as well as a few pie pumpkins and leeks that need to be harvested before the weather turns cold for the winter. Families and individuals may come to the farm from 9AM-6PM both days, and can harvest up to 10 -10lb bags of produce per person, while supplies last. We need your help in spreading the word, as what a nice way for some folks out there to get fresh Thanksgiving goodies.

Shashank Pulluru, Indian Student From Andhra Pradesh, Shot Outside Middle Tennessee State University (MTSE) Campus

In what will be the seventh such violent incident targeting Indian students, Shashank Pulluru, a MBA student at the Middle Tennessee State University was shot outside his apartment complex. Shashank Pulluru is a student from Andhra Pradesh and stays just outside the MTSE campus in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Pulluru is currently listed as being in critical but stable condition. He was shot in the chest and surgery was performed on his chest to remove the bullet. The police department of Murfreesboro is investigating into this shooting incident and according to updates provided, there are no witnesses to this incident.

According to a news update:

While the investigation to nab the assailant is on, the police said at this point of time there was no suspect. “We are looking into various possibilities.”
Pulluru hails from Hanamkonda town of Warangal district of Andhra Pradesh. He came to the US last year to pursue MS. His father P Sudhakar works as registrar in the cooperative department while mother Arundhati is a teacher.
His family said he was shot by some African Americans when he and two of his friends returned to their apartment after the classes.
According to his uncle P Ashok, the family received a phone call early Sunday from one of Pulluru’s friends that he was injured when some Africans opened fire at him.

This incident follows a recent string of incidents where Indian students have been targeted in unrelated incidents. Vikram Kumar Tummala and Soumya Tummala Reddy, both students of SIUC, were recently found dead. Three other Indian students were murdered on US university campuses in the first few months of this year. Akkaldevi Srinivas, who was a doctor from Andhra Pradesh, was found dead in a pool of blood in Pennsylvania. Prior to that, two PhD doctoral students Chandrasekhar Reddy Komma and Kiran Kumar Allam, were found shot dead in their apartment at the Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.

In his first television interview since his historic election, Obama said he has spent the days since the election on short- and long-term issues, from doing “whatever it takes” to stabilize the economy, restore consumer confidence and create jobs, to getting sound health care and energy policies through Congress. The president-elect also said that as soon as he takes office he will work with his security team and the military to draw down U.S. troops in Iraq, shore up Afghanistan and “stamp out al-Qaida once and for all.”
While investors are still riding a rollercoaster on Wall Street, Obama said the economy would have deteriorated even more without the $700 billion bank bailout. Re-regulation is a legislative priority, he said, not to crush “the entrepreneurial spirit and risk-taking of American capitalism” but to “restore a sense of balance.”
“There’s no doubt that we have not been able yet to reset the confidence in the financial markets and in the consumer markets and among businesses that allow the economy to move forward in a strong way,” Obama said. “And my job as president is going to be to make sure that we restore that confidence.”
He also said: “We shouldn’t worry about the deficit next year or even the year after. … The most important thing is that we avoid a deepening recession.”
While “we have the tools,” the president-elect said not enough has been done to address bank foreclosures and distressed homeowners.

SiPort is a Semi-Conductor company that is based in the Silicon Valley. As part of cost cutting measures, the company recently laid off some of its employees. Jing Hua Wu ,a Lead Product Test Engineer, was among the employees who were let go. Wu was unhappy with this move of the company and in a fit of rage shot SiPort’s CEO, Sid Agarwal, and Vice President Of Operations, Brian Pugh.

Sid Agarwal is from India and held an Electrical Engineering degree from IIT-Kanpur. He also held a MBA degree from the University of Chicago and a Masters in Science from Southern Illinois University (SIU). Sid had founded SiPort in 2005 and received funding from many investors.

Jing Hua Wu (left) is said to have used a handgun during the shootings. Wu is of Asian descent, weighs about 170 Lbs and is 5 feet 11 inches tall. Wu is still at large and Police have launched a man hunt for him. Wu was last said to be in a silver four-door Mercury Mariner sport utility vehicle which bore a California license plate No. 6CJU602.

The man who was primarily responsible for the great run that the Colorado Rockies had in the 2007 MLB Baseball season has been traded to the Oakland A’s. Matt Holliday, the Big Daddy of the Rockies Baseball team and unarguably the most popular man on the team is now headed to Oakland. The Oakland A’s got Matt Holiday in exchange for pitcher Greg Smith, reliever Huston Street and outfielder Carlos Gonzalez. There is also word that the Oakland A’s might just put Holliday again on the trading block and get some other players from other teams in exchange.

Matt Holliday is 29 years old and an outfielder. He was the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the 2007 season of the National League (NL). His batting average stood him third in the National League in the just concluded 2008 season. The Rockies had a wild season in 2007, but in 2008 they failed to reach the finish line for playoffs.

Kmart says that foot traffic to its stores has increased, thanks to its Layaway program and early Black Friday deals. Sales have increased in Kmart stores inspite of a bad economy and consumers are spending money. Kmart was bought by Sears a few years ago and has made a head start this holiday season to snatch away consumers going to its rival stores.

Kmart is also thanking its Layaway credit program for letting consumers buy what they want. A Layaway program allows a consumer to buy a desired item by putting down a down payment, service fee and cancellation fee. The store will reserve the merchandise for the consumer and allow the consumer to make biweekly payments towards the merchandise.

Walmart and Target got rid of their Layaway programs a few years ago citing huge costs of running the program. But looks like the Layaway program is paying off for Kmart. According to KHNL, a Kmart representative had very positive things to say about their Layaway program :

“It’s popular,” said Kehaulani Decherong, a K-Mart customer service representative. “A lot of people have been calling to find out when we’re going to reopen again and when we did, we had a lot of customers.”
It’s an eight-week program, where you put 10 percent down or $15, whichever is greater. You pay a little each week, and once it’s paid off, you can take your goodies home.
“With the prices going up so high, not everyone can afford to buy what they want for their children for Christmas all at one time,” said Decherong. “So that’s why our layaway plan kicks in.”

A website www.elayaway.com specializes in bringing layaway deals to consumers. elayaway allows consumers to buy products without taking on any debt. Instead consumers can set their monthly payments to pay towards to the cost of the merchandise. elayway is sure to see more traffic this shopping season as the economy continues to go down.

The Wall Street Journal is wondering if Layaway is the new credit card in this economy? Wal-Mart and other big retailers like Target should reconsider their layaway programs. Bringing back Layaway programs will only add more incentive in bringing customers back to their stores this holiday season. Wal-Mart’s layaway program was hugely popular and its shutdown irked a lot of Wal-Mart loyalists back in 2006. Online petitions were launched asking Wal-Mart to reconsider, but Wal-Mart did not budge. Will lowering consumer spending and a drop in sales during the holiday season convince Wal-Mart to bring back its Layaway program. Only time can tell.
