After publishing the Virgin Mary nude on the cover of Playboy Mexico magazine, the owner of Playboy magazine (Playboy Enterprises) has publicly apologized and said it did not intend to portray the Virgin of Guadalupe or any other religious figure. Their intent was to only reflect a Renaissance-like mood on the cover.
The picture of the cover magazine (left) was part of the Playboy Mexico’s December edition. The model in the picture is Maria Florencia and the cover line reads “We Love You, Maria” in Spanish. She is standing in front of a stained glass window wearing only a white cloth over her head and breasts.
The playboy cover created outrage among Catholics in Mexico as it was published only a few days before Mexico’s traditional Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe. The festival also sees an annual pilgrimage to a basilica situated in Mexico City. The Virgin of Guadalupe appeared before a peasant in the 16th century and is worshipped by most Catholics in Mexico.
