“Choking Game” is the new craze for young people

The “Choking Game” is very deadly and is becoming the new fad among young men and women. “choking game” is a game in which youngsters wrap everything from dog leashes to bungee cords around their necks to temporarily cut blood flow to their brains. This leads to a “dreamy, floating-in-space sensation when blood rushes back to the brain”, which is described by today’s kids as “very cool”. I wonder how people come up with this weird stuff. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently released an estimate for the number of deaths caused by this game. They are estimating 82 deaths were caused between 1997 and 2007. Deaths caused by Erotic asphyxiation were not included in this number.

Erotic asphyxiation is another practice, very similar, to the choking game used for increased sexual pleasure. Wikipedia describes Erotic asphyxiation as “Erotic asphyxiation, asphyxiophilia, or breath control play, is the practice of intentionally reducing the amount of oxygen to the brain during sexual stimulation in order to heighten the received pleasure from orgasm.”. Incidentally, it is rumored that the lead singer of INXS, Michael Hutchence, had died from erotic asphyxiation in 1997.

Williams County Family,Children First Council,Partnerships for Success suggest that parents look out for the following danger signs and keep a watch on their kids :

  • Suspicious mark on side of the neck sometimes hidden by wearing turtlenecks, scarves and up-turned collars.
  • Changes in personality, such as overly aggressive or agitated.
  • Straps, rope or belt lying around without any reason.
  • A flushed face or bloodshot eyes.
  • A thud in the bedroom or against a wall.
